General strategy
The PET tests real-world English at an intermediate level. Questions are more challenging than KET but follow predictable patterns.
Time allocation (Reading, 45 minutes)
- Part 1 (Matching) — 7 minutes
- Part 2 (Detail matching) — 7 minutes
- Part 3 (MC Reading) — 10 minutes
- Part 4 (Gapped Text) — 10 minutes
- Part 5 (Multiple Choice Cloze) — 6 minutes
- Part 6 (Open Cloze) — 5 minutes
Top tips
- Read the questions before the text in Parts 1-2
- In Part 3, find the relevant paragraph for each question
- In Part 5, focus on vocabulary and collocations
- In Part 6, the missing words are small grammar words
- Always answer everything — no negative marking
