Part 1 — Multiple Choice Cloze

Eight gaps, four word options each. At CPE level the choices test very fine vocabulary distinctions — synonyms, collocations, idioms, and register.

Strategy

• Read the entire text first to grasp tone and register
• Watch for fixed phrases and idioms where only one form is correct
• Pay close attention to dependent prepositions and collocations
• Many options will look plausible — choose the most natural and idiomatic
• Time guide: 12 minutes
