CPE Strategy

General strategy

The CPE is the most challenging Cambridge exam. It rewards sophisticated language, register awareness, and confident handling of complex texts and tasks.

Time allocation (Reading & UoE, 90 minutes total)

• Part 1 (MC Cloze) — 12 minutes
• Part 2 (Open Cloze) — 12 minutes
• Part 3 (Word Formation) — 12 minutes
• Part 4 (Key Word Transformation) — 20 minutes (high value)
• Part 5 (Long Reading) — 15 minutes
• Part 6 (Gapped Text) — 18 minutes
• Part 7 (Multiple Matching) — 15 minutes

What makes CPE different

• Texts are longer and more abstract — academic, literary, philosophical
• Vocabulary distinctions are very fine — synonyms with subtle connotations
• Writing requires register flexibility, nuanced argument, and natural idiomatic English
• Speaking expects fluency, complexity, and the ability to develop themes spontaneously
