Irregular Past Tense

The most common Spanish verbs are irregular in the preterite (simple past). They change their stem and use their own endings — with no written accents.

ir/ser → fui — Fui al cine ayer. (I went to the cinema yesterday.)

tener → tuve — Tuve un examen. (I had an exam.)

hacer → hice — Hice los deberes. (I did my homework.)

Quick rule: learn the irregular stem, then add: -e, -iste, -o, -imos, -isteis, -ieron.

IR and SER: identical twins

Ir (to go) and ser (to be) share the same preterite — context tells you which is which:

yofui
túfuiste
él / ella / ustedfue
nosotrosfuimos
vosotrosfuisteis
ellos / ustedesfueron

Fui a Madrid. (I went to Madrid — ir)

Fue un día fantástico. (It was a fantastic day — ser)

The U-Stem Group: tener, estar, poder

Several verbs take a stem with u + the irregular endings (-e, -iste, -o, -imos, -isteis, -ieron):

tener → tuv-: tuve, tuviste, tuvo, tuvimos, tuvisteis, tuvieron

estar → estuv-: estuve, estuviste, estuvo…

poder → pud-: pude, pudiste, pudo…

poner → pus-: puse, pusiste, puso…

No accents! tuve and tuvo (not "tuvé"/"tuvó") — the stress falls naturally on the stem.

The I-Stem Group: hacer, querer, venir

Another family takes an i stem:

hacer → hic-: hice, hiciste, hizo (c→z before o), hicimos, hicisteis, hicieron

querer → quis-: quise, quisiste, quiso…

venir → vin-: vine, viniste, vino…

¿Qué hiciste el fin de semana? (What did you do at the weekend?)

Mis amigos vinieron a mi casa. (My friends came to my house.)

DAR, VER and DECIR

Three more high-frequency irregulars:

dar (to give): di, diste, dio, dimos, disteis, dieron — takes -er/-ir endings with no accents

ver (to see): vi, viste, vio, vimos, visteis, vieron

decir (to say): dije, dijiste, dijo, dijimos, dijisteis, dijeron (not "dijieron")

Vi una película muy buena. (I saw a very good film.)

Me dijo la verdad. (He told me the truth.)

Time Markers for the Past

These expressions signal the preterite:

ayer (yesterday) — Ayer fui al mercado.

anoche (last night) — Anoche no pude dormir.

la semana pasada (last week) — La semana pasada tuvimos visita.

el año pasado (last year) — El año pasado estuve en Italia.

hace dos días (two days ago) — Hace dos días hizo mucho calor.
