Present Progressive

To say what is happening right now, Spanish uses estar + gerund — just like English "to be + -ing".

Estoy comiendo. (I am eating.)

Estás hablando. (You are speaking.)

Estamos estudiando. (We are studying.)

Quick rule: conjugate estar, then add the gerund (-ando / -iendo form). The gerund never changes.

Step 1: Conjugate ESTAR

The first half of the structure is the present tense of estar:

yoestoy
túestás
él / ella / ustedestá
nosotrosestamos
vosotrosestáis
ellos / ustedesestán

Step 2: Form the Gerund

The gerund is the Spanish "-ing" form. It is built from the infinitive:

-AR verbs → -ando: hablar → hablando; trabajar → trabajando

-ER verbs → -iendo: comer → comiendo; beber → bebiendo

-IR verbs → -iendo: vivir → viviendo; escribir → escribiendo

The gerund never changes for person or number — only estar is conjugated.

Putting It Together

Estar + gerund, side by side:

Estoy trabajando. (I am working.)

Está lloviendo. (It is raining.)

Estamos viendo la tele. (We are watching TV.)

Están jugando al fútbol. (They are playing football.)

Negation: No estoy durmiendo. (I am not sleeping.) — "no" goes before estar.

Irregular Gerunds

A few common verbs have irregular gerunds — learn these as vocabulary:

leer → leyendo — Estoy leyendo una novela.

dormir → durmiendo — El bebé está durmiendo.

pedir → pidiendo — Está pidiendo la cuenta.

decir → diciendo — ¿Qué estás diciendo?

oír → oyendo — Estoy oyendo música.

Pattern: -er/-ir verbs whose stem ends in a vowel use -yendo (le-yendo, o-yendo).

Spanish vs English Use

Careful — Spanish uses the progressive less than English:

Right now: Estoy cocinando. (I am cooking at this moment.) ✓ progressive

Habit / general: Trabajo en un banco. (I am working at a bank these days.) → simple present in Spanish!

Future plans: English says "I am travelling tomorrow"; Spanish says Viajo mañana — never the progressive.

Rule of thumb: only use estar + gerund for actions in progress at the moment of speaking.

Common Mistakes

Traps for English speakers

These are the errors English speakers make most often.

Estoy comer
→
Estoy comiendo
Use the gerund (-ando / -iendo) after estar.
Soy estudiando
→
Estoy estudiando
The progressive uses estar, never ser.
Está comendo
→
Está comiendo
-er verbs take -iendo.

Key Takeaways

  • Structure: estar (conjugated) + gerund (fixed)
  • -AR → -ando; -ER/-IR → -iendo
  • Irregular gerunds: leyendo, durmiendo, pidiendo, diciendo, oyendo
  • Use it only for actions happening right now
  • Habits and future plans take the simple present, not the progressive
  • Negation: no + estar + gerund
