Read carefully before answering. In gap-fill tests, look for signal words (already, before, never, just) that reveal whether you need generic or specific reference. The presence of "the" in the answer options usually indicates a specific/category use.
Master institution shortcuts. Test writers favour "go to school/hospital/prison/university" (participant, no article) vs "visit the school/hospital" (building, with article). Knowing these high-frequency patterns is an instant 1–2 marks.
Check the preposition too. Phrases like "by car/bus/train" (no article) are often tested together with articles. When you see transport in context, the article rule usually follows: "travel by the train" is wrong (should be "by train").
