En inglés, el tiempo se describe con palabras específicas que no siempre coinciden con las estructuras en español. Aquí veremos términos comunes para describir condiciones meteorológicas con precisión.

¡Atención! En inglés, casi siempre se usa la estructura “It’s + -ing” o “It’s + adjetivo”. Nunca decimos “*The weather rains” ni “*There is rain” en contextos cotidianos.

cuando el español nos confunde

En español decimos “hace + sustantivo” (hace viento, hace frío), pero en inglés usamos adjetivos con “It’s...”. Nunca “*It makes wind”.

Errores típicos de hispanohablantes

El verbo debe estar en gerundio (-ing) cuando describe el tiempo actual.

Usa el adjetivo sunny, no el sustantivo sun.
The weather is very bad today.

It’s terrible weather today. / It’s awful.
Evita “the weather is...” en conversaciones informales; es más natural decir directamente “It’s...”.
There is a storm.

There’s a storm coming. / It’s stormy.
Para hablar del tiempo presente, usa stormy o una construcción con coming.
