Past simple vs past continuous: visión B1

En nivel B1 combinas estos dos tiempos en narraciones más largas. Entender su relación es clave para contar historias de forma natural.

Past simple

acciones completadas, los eventos principales de una historia

Past continuous

escenario de fondo, acciones interrumpidas o simultáneas

Estaba caminando (fondo) → vi (evento)

Mientras ella cocinaba, él llegó.

While she was cooking, he arrived.

Continuous = fondo · Simple = eventos

Escenario

It was raining. People were walking quickly.

Evento 1

Suddenly, a car stopped.

Evento 2

A man got out and shouted.

Evento 3

Everyone turned to look.

El escenario usa past continuous. Cada evento de la trama usa past simple. Alterna entre ellos de forma natural al narrar.

when vs while (profundidad B1)

when + evento (simple)

She was reading when the lights went out.

when = momento de interrupción

When I arrived, they were arguing.

while + fondo (continuous)

While she was sleeping, he cooked dinner.

while = durante la acción en curso

I fell while I was running.

Algunos verbos estáticos tienen un significado activo que SÍ permite el continuo: I was thinking about you (= proceso mental). El contexto decide.

Errores comunes

I was watching TV when my friend was calling.

→

I was watching TV when my friend called.

While she was waiting, the bus arrived and she was getting on.

→

...the bus arrived and she got on.
