Cap. 1

Articles

Genérico vs específico · el con categorías

Artículos en B2: genérico vs específico

En B2 dominas la distinción sutil entre referencia general y específica, y las reglas para usar "the" con categorías, nacionalidades e instituciones.

Genérico (sin artículo)
Music is universal. Cats are independent. (afirmaciones generales)
Genérico (the + singular)
The piano was invented in 1700. (la especie/categoría)
Específico (the)
The music at the party was loud. (esta música específica)

El con categorías y grupos

Inventos/instrumentos
The telephone, the internet, the guitar, the piano
Nacionalidades (grupos)
The French love bread. The British value tradition.
Adjetivo como sustantivo plural
The rich, the poor, the elderly, the unemployed
Periódicos
The Times, The Guardian (pero: revistas sin artículo — Time, Vogue)
Cadenas montañosas, ríos
The Alps, the Amazon, the Nile (pero: Mount Everest, Lake Como)

Artículo cero: instituciones y uso abstracto

Instituciones (general)
go to school / hospital / prison / university / church (sin artículo = como participante)
vs el edificio
visit the school / the hospital (con the = como edificio/visitante)
Comidas
have breakfast / lunch / dinner (sin artículo en general)
Medios de transporte
by car / bus / train / plane
Momentos del día con preposición
at night, at noon, by day

Distinciones sutiles

Genérico (sin artículo)
Coffee is grown in Brazil.
café en general
Children need attention.
Específico (the)
The coffee here is excellent.
este café
The children in my class are clever.

Errores frecuentes

The life is unpredictable.
Life is unpredictable.
abstracto/genérico → sin artículo
She goes to the school by the bus.
She goes to school by bus.
institución + transporte → sin artículo
The poors need help.
The poor need help.
the + adjetivo (sin -s) = grupo
The Mount Everest is the highest.
Mount Everest is the highest.
montañas individuales → sin artículo
Lee cuidadosamente antes de responder. En exámenes de rellenar huecos, busca palabras señal (already, before, never, just) que indiquen si necesitas referencia genérica o específica. La presencia de "the" en las opciones suele indicar un uso específico/de categoría.
Domina los atajos de instituciones. Los examinadores suelen usar "go to school/hospital/prison/university" (participante, sin artículo) vs "visit the school/hospital" (edificio, con artículo).
