Cap. 14

Comparisons (advanced)

Comparativos · Superlativos · Comparaciones dobles

Comparaciones avanzadas

1
Comparativo + than
más grande que · más caro que
2
Less + adjetivo + than
menos concurrido que
3
As + adjetivo + as
tan inteligente como · no tan frío como
4
The + comparativo, the + comparativo
Cuanto más alto, más frío
5
Superlativos — the most / -est
El más alto · el más interesante

Comparativo + than

Adjetivo corto (1 sílaba): adj + -er + than taller than
Adjetivo largo (2+ sílabas): more + adj + than more interesting than
Irregulares: good → better · bad → worse · far → further

Usa 'than' después del comparativo.

Madrid is bigger than Barcelona.
French is more difficult than Spanish.
The film was worse than I expected.
¡Atención! Nunca digas "more bigger" o "more taller".

Less + adjetivo + than

less + adj + than less expensive than
not as + adj + as not as expensive as

'Less' funciona con cualquier adjetivo. En inglés cotidiano, se prefiere 'not as ... as', especialmente con adjetivos cortos.

El museo está menos concurrido entre semana.
The museum is less crowded on weekdays.
This coffee is less strong than the other.
The new flat isn't as big as the old one.
¡Atención! No digas "less cheap" — usa "more expensive". Con adjetivos cortos, prefiere "not as ... as".

As + adjetivo + as

Dos cosas son iguales · o NO iguales

Igualdad: as + adj + as as tall as her brother
Desigualdad: not as + adj + as not as tall as
Con números: as many / as much as

También funciona con adverbios: 'she runs as fast as him'.

Ella es tan inteligente como su hermana.
She is as clever as her sister.
No hace tanto frío como ayer.
It's not as cold as yesterday.
Tengo tantos amigos como tú.
I have as many friends as you do.
¡Atención! Nunca digas "as tall than" — siempre es "as ... as", nunca "as ... than".

The + comparativo, the + comparativo

Comparaciones dobles — dos cosas cambian juntas

The + comparativo + cláusula , the + comparativo + cláusula
The + more / less + cláusula , the + more / less + cláusula

The higher you climb, the colder it gets.
Cuanto más estudio, más recuerdo.
The more I study, the more I remember.
The older he gets, the wiser he becomes.
¡Atención! Siempre usa 'the' antes de ambos comparativos — "More I cook, more I like it" es incorrecto.

Superlativos — the most / -est

Comparar una cosa con todo un grupo

Adjetivo corto: the + adj + -est the tallest · the biggest
Adjetivo largo: the + most + adj the most expensive
Irregulares: the best · the worst · the furthest

Siempre usa 'the' antes del superlativo. Suele ir seguido de 'in' + lugar o 'of' + grupo.

Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world.
That was the most boring film I've ever seen.
She is the best student in the class.
¡Atención! Usa "in" con lugares — "the best in the world", NO "of the world".
