Zero Conditional

Verdades generales · Hechos científicos · Cosas siempre ciertas
IF / WHEN + Presente Simple , Presente Simple

Usamos el zero conditional para hablar de cosas que son siempre verdaderas: hechos, hábitos o leyes naturales. IF y WHEN son intercambiables en esta estructura.

Si calientas agua a 100°C, hierve.
→
If you heat water to 100°C, it boils.
Si llueve, las calles se mojan.
→
If it rains, the streets get wet.
Cuando estoy cansado, cometo errores.
→
When I'm tired, I make mistakes.
¡Atención! En español decimos "si llueve, se mojan", pero en inglés la forma es fija: IF + presente, presente.

First Conditional

Situaciones reales · Resultados probables en el futuro
IF + Presente Simple , will / can / may + infinitivo

Usamos el first conditional cuando la situación es real o posible y el resultado es probable. La cláusula con IF va en presente — nunca uses 'will' después de 'if'.

Si estudias mucho, aprobarás el examen.
→
If you study hard, you will pass the exam.
Si llueve mañana, nos quedaremos dentro.
→
If it rains tomorrow, we'll stay inside.
Si ella llama, puedo preguntarle directamente.
→
If she calls, I can ask her directly.
¡Error frecuente! No digas "if I will go" — siempre usa el presente después de IF.

Second Conditional

Situaciones imaginarias o improbables en presente / futuro
IF + Pasado Simple , would / could + infinitivo

Usamos el second conditional cuando la situación es imaginaria, improbable o imposible — ahora o en el futuro. Después de 'If I', usa 'were' (no 'was') en inglés formal.

Si ganara la lotería, viajaría por el mundo.
→
If I won the lottery, I would travel the world.
Si yo fuera tú, estudiaría más.
→
If I were you, I would study more.
Si tuviera más tiempo, podría aprender español.
→
If she had more time, she could learn Spanish.
¡Cuidado! No mezcles tiempos: "If I would have time, I will call you" es un error común por interferencia del español.

Third Conditional

Situaciones imaginarias en el pasado · Arrepentimientos · Cosas que no ocurrieron
IF + Past Perfect , would / could / might + have + participio

Usamos el third conditional para imaginar un pasado diferente. La situación NO ocurrió.
would have → resultado imaginario seguro · might have → menos seguro · could have → habilidad no usada.

Si hubiera estudiado, habría aprobado.
→
If I had studied, I would have passed.
Si ella no hubiera salido temprano, podría haberlo conocido.
→
If she hadn't left early, she might have met him.
Si hubiéramos cogido un taxi, podríamos haber llegado a tiempo.
→
If we'd taken a taxi, we could have arrived on time.
¡Nunca! No pongas 'would' en la cláusula con IF — "If I would have studied" está mal.

First vs Second — ¿Cuál es la diferencia?

If I have time, I'll call you.
→ Quizá tenga tiempo. Posibilidad real.
If she studies, she'll pass.
→ Ella podría estudiar. Resultado probable.
Second · Probablemente NO pase
If I had more time, I would call you.
→ No tengo tiempo ahora. Imaginario.
If she studied, she would pass.
→ Ella no estudia. Irreal.

Errores comunes — Trampas del FCE

Nunca uses 'will' después de 'if' en la cláusula condicional
She would passed the exam.
→
She would pass the exam.
Después de 'would' se usa el infinitivo sin 'to'
If I was you...

If I were you...
'Were' es la forma correcta en second conditional
They would have catched the train.
→
They would have caught the train.
Participio pasado irregular
If he wouldn't have gone...
→
If he hadn't gone...
Nunca pongas 'would' en la cláusula con IF
