Past Simple — Pretérito Indefinido

Talk about completed actions in the past

What Is the Pretérito Indefinido?

The pretérito indefinido is the Spanish past simple. Use it for completed actions at a definite time in the past — just like English "I spoke", "she went", "we ate".

Ayer hablé con mi madre. (Yesterday I spoke to my mother.)

Comimos paella el domingo. (We ate paella on Sunday.)

Fui a Madrid en 2020. (I went to Madrid in 2020.)

Typical time markers: ayer (yesterday), anoche (last night), la semana pasada (last week), el año pasado (last year), en 2020.

Regular -AR Verbs

hablar (to speak) — model for all regular -ar verbs

yohabléI spoke
túhablasteyou spoke
él / ella / ustedhablóhe / she spoke
nosotroshablamoswe spoke
vosotroshablasteisyou all spoke
ellos / ellas / ustedeshablaronthey spoke

Watch the accents: hablé and habló carry written accents. Without the accent, hablo means "I speak" (present tense)!

Regular -ER and -IR Verbs

comer (to eat) and vivir (to live) share the same endings

yocomíviví
túcomisteviviste
él / ella / ustedcomióvivió
nosotroscomimosvivimos
vosotroscomisteisvivisteis
ellos / ellas / ustedescomieronvivieron

Good news: -er and -ir verbs use one single set of endings in this tense — learn it once, use it twice.

Ser and Ir — Identical Twins

The two most common irregulars share exactly the same forms

yofuinosotrosfuimos
túfuistevosotrosfuisteis
él / ella / ustedfueellos / ustedesfueron

Fui al cine. (I went to the cinema — from ir.)

Fui camarero un verano. (I was a waiter one summer — from ser.)

La fiesta fue en mi casa. (The party was at my house.)

Context always tells you which verb it is — and notice there are no written accents on any of these forms.

Hacer and Tener

Strong preterites: new stem + endings without accents

hacer (hic-)tener (tuv-)
yohicetuve
túhicistetuviste
él / ella / ustedhizotuvo
nosotroshicimostuvimos
vosotroshicisteistuvisteis
ellos / ustedeshicierontuvieron

Spelling alert: the él/ella form of hacer is hizo (c changes to z to keep the soft sound).

Estar — Estuve

Another strong preterite, same pattern as tener

yoestuvenosotrosestuvimos
túestuvistevosotrosestuvisteis
él / ella / ustedestuvoellos / ustedesestuvieron

Ayer estuve en casa todo el día. (Yesterday I was at home all day.)

¿Estuviste en la fiesta el sábado? (Were you at the party on Saturday?)

Notice the family resemblance: tener has tuv- and estar has estuv- — same endings: -e, -iste, -o, -imos, -isteis, -ieron.

Common Mistakes

Traps for English speakers

These are the errors English speakers make most often with the pretérito indefinido.

Ayer yo hablo con ella.
→
Ayer hablé con ella.
The accent changes the tense: hablo = I speak, hablé = I spoke
Ella comeó la pizza.
→
Ella comió la pizza.
Don't invent regular forms: -er verbs take -ió, not -eó
Él tenió un examen.
→
Él tuvo un examen.
Tener is irregular: tuve, tuviste, tuvo — never "tenió"
Yo hací la cena.
→
Yo hice la cena.
Hacer is irregular: hice, hiciste, hizo — never "hací"
Ayer voy al cine.
→
Ayer fui al cine.
With ayer / anoche / la semana pasada, use the past — not the present
