Using the past tense to describe a life: events and background
In a biography you alternate between the indefinido (completed events: was born, studied, won) and the imperfecto (ongoing background: lived in, worked as, had a passion for).
Nació en Madrid en 1932. (born — indefinido)
Vivía en un pequeño pueblo del norte. (background — imperfecto)
Estudió Medicina y se graduó en 1956. (events — indefinido)
Open with birth, origin, and a brief character/context description.
Nació en + city + en + year.
Era hijo/a de… (He/She was the son/daughter of…)
Desde pequeño/a, le apasionaba… (From a young age, he/she was passionate about…)
Use the indefinido for milestones: started, finished, married, moved, published, won.
Empezó a trabajar como… · Se casó con… · Se trasladó a…
Publicó su primera novela en… · Ganó el premio… en…
Falleció en + year. (He/She passed away in…)
Link achievements with connectors; use gracias a (thanks to) and a lo largo de (throughout).
Gracias a su trabajo, consiguió… (Thanks to his work, he/she achieved…)
A lo largo de su carrera, publicó más de veinte novelas.
Se le conoce sobre todo por… (He/She is best known for…)
End with legacy or importance — use the present tense for ongoing impact.
