Bring a person to life through precise language and revealing detail
A character sketch is a short descriptive portrait of a real or imagined person. It focuses on revealing who that person is through physical appearance, personality, habits, speech, and a telling anecdote — not just a list of adjectives.
Go beyond generic adjectives. Use comparisons, specific details, and present-tense description for immediacy.
Reveal personality through actions, reactions, and habits — not adjectives alone. Use relative clauses, gerunds, and specific anecdotes.
A person's way of speaking reveals their character. Describe their vocabulary, rhythm, and tone — and occasionally quote them (indirectly).
End with a brief anecdote that encapsulates the person's character. This is the most powerful technique — a single scene says more than ten adjectives.
