Verbs That Look Familiar but Aren't

Several common French verbs look like English words but have very different meanings at B1 level.

French word	Looks like	Actual meaning	True equivalent
assister à	assist	to attend (a show/meeting)	aider (to help/assist)
attendre	attend	to wait (for)	assister à (to attend)
rester	rest	to stay / remain	se reposer (to rest)
quitter	quit	to leave (a place/person)	abandonner / démissionner (to quit a job)

These nouns are particularly tricky because they are very similar to English but mean something different.

These adjectives and adverbs cause consistent errors at B1 level.

Seeing false friends in context helps cement the correct meaning.

J'ai assisté à la conférence. (I attended the conference.) ✓ — not I assisted at...
J'attends le bus depuis 20 minutes. (I've been waiting for the bus for 20 min.) ✓
La location de cet appartement coûte 900€. (The rental of this flat costs €900.) ✓
La situation actuelle est difficile. (The current situation is difficult.) ✓
Elle est très sensible — elle pleure facilement. (She is very sensitive.) ✓
Cette rue est très large. (This street is very wide.) ✓

Avoid	Use	Why
J'ai assisté à Marie pendant la réunion. (helped her)	J'ai aidé Marie pendant la réunion.	Assister à = to attend. To help someone = aider quelqu'un.
Je vais à la librairie emprunter un livre. (borrow)	Je vais à la bibliothèque emprunter un livre.	Librairie = bookshop (to buy). Bibliothèque = library (to borrow).
La situation actuelle est la vérité. (actually)	En réalité / En fait, c'est la vérité.	Actuel = current (not actual). Actually = en réalité / en fait.
Je partirai éventuellement. (eventually)	Je partirai finalement. / Je finirai par partir.	Éventuellement = possibly / perhaps (not eventually). Eventually = finalement / à la fin.
