Indirect Speech — Le Discours Indirect

Report what someone said using tense shifts and adapted pronouns

Reporting Statements — Que + Clause

Statements are reported with dire que, affirmer que, expliquer que, etc. Pronouns and tense shift when the reporting verb is in the past.

DirectIndirect (past reporting verb)
«Je suis fatigué.»Il a dit qu'il était fatigué. (présent → imparfait)
«J'ai fini.»Elle a dit qu'elle avait fini. (PC → PQP)
«Je partirai demain.»Il a dit qu'il partirait le lendemain. (futur → conditionnel)

Reporting Yes/No Questions — Si

Yes/no questions become si + clause (word order returns to normal — no inversion).

  • «Tu viens?» → Elle a demandé si je venais.
  • «Est-ce qu'il a mangé?» → Il a demandé si elle avait mangé.
  • Note: si becomes s' before il/ils: Il a demandé s'il était prêt.

Reporting Wh-Questions

Wh-questions keep their interrogative word but drop inversion.

Direct questionIndirect (reported)
«Où habites-tu?»Il a demandé j'habitais.
«Quand est-il arrivé?»Elle a voulu savoir quand il était arrivé.
«Pourquoi tu pleures?»Elle a demandé pourquoi je pleurais.
«Qu'est-ce que tu veux?»Il a demandé ce que je voulais.

Reporting Commands — De + Infinitif

Commands are reported with de + infinitif. Negation: de ne pas + infinitif.

  • «Ferme la porte!» → Elle m'a dit de fermer la porte.
  • «Ne pars pas!» → Il m'a demandé de ne pas partir.
  • «Soyez patients!» → Le prof nous a demandé d'être patients.

Time Expression Changes

When reporting in the past, time words shift to remain logically consistent.

DirectIndirect
aujourd'huice jour-là
hierla veille
demainle lendemain
maintenantà ce moment-là
ici

Common Mistakes

Il a dit qu'il est fatigué. (present reporting verb → can keep présent)
Il a dit qu'il était fatigué. (past reporting verb → imparfait)
When the reporting verb is in the past, the tense of the reported clause must shift back.
Elle a demandé est-ce qu'il vient.
Elle a demandé s'il venait.
In indirect speech, no inversion and no est-ce que — use si + normal word order.
Il a demandé qu'est-ce que tu veux.
Il a demandé ce que tu voulais.
Qu'est-ce que → ce que in indirect speech. Drop the est-ce que structure.
Elle m'a dit fermer la porte.
Elle m'a dit de fermer la porte.
Commands in indirect speech need de + infinitif, not just the infinitive alone.
