Write a structured argumentative essay presenting your view with supporting arguments
A French opinion essay at B1 follows a clear four-paragraph structure. The introduction presents the topic and your thesis (your main opinion). The next two paragraphs develop your argument: paragraph 2 gives your strongest argument with evidence, and paragraph 3 acknowledges the opposing view before refuting it or adding nuance. The conclusion restates your position and broadens the perspective. Never introduce new facts in the conclusion.
| Paragraph | Content | Key connector |
|---|---|---|
| Introduction | Context + thesis statement | De nos jours… / Il est indéniable que… |
| Body 1 | Main argument + example | Tout d'abord… / En effet… |
| Body 2 | Counter-argument + rebuttal | Certes… / Cependant… / Néanmoins… |
| Conclusion | Restate position + broader view | En conclusion… / Pour toutes ces raisons… |
Your thesis is the single most important sentence in your essay — it states your position clearly and previews your argument. Avoid vague openings like Je pense que c'est bien. Instead, use impersonal or elevated structures that signal academic register. A good thesis announces what you think and why, in one or two sentences. Position it at the end of your introduction paragraph.
Connectors (connecteurs logiques) are essential in a French essay. They signal the relationship between ideas: addition, contrast, cause, consequence, illustration, and concession. Vary your connectors — using aussi five times is penalised. French essay connectors are often more formal than English equivalents: prefer néanmoins over mais, par conséquent over donc.
| Function | Connectors |
|---|---|
| Addition | De plus, En outre, Qui plus est, Par ailleurs |
| Contrast | Cependant, Néanmoins, Or, En revanche, Toutefois |
A strong essay does not ignore opposing views — it addresses them and then refutes them or qualifies them. This is the concession-réfutation technique. Start with Certes… or Il est vrai que… to grant the opposing point, then use cependant / néanmoins / or to pivot back to your position. This shows critical thinking and raises your grade significantly at B1.
Examiners notice strong openings and closings. Open with a broad statement about the topic (accroche), then narrow to your specific thesis. Avoid Dans cette rédaction, je vais parler de… — it is too mechanical. Close by restating your thesis with different words, then widen the angle with a question or broader reflection (ouverture). The ouverture shows you can think beyond the essay question.
| Part | Model phrases |
|---|---|
| Accroche (hook) | De nos jours… / À l'heure où… / Il est devenu courant de… |
| Thesis | Il convient d'examiner… / Il apparaît clairement que… |
| Conclusion opener | Pour toutes ces raisons… / En définitive… / Tout bien considéré… |
| Restate thesis | Il ressort de cette analyse que… |
| Ouverture | On peut dès lors se demander si… / Il reste à voir si… |
