Express contrast and concession using bien que, malgré, quoique, or, pourtant and more

Bien que / Quoique + Subjonctif

Bien que and quoique both mean although and always take the subjunctive.

Bien qu'il soit fatigué, il continue à travailler.
Quoiqu'elle ait beaucoup d'expérience, elle a été refusée.
Both are interchangeable; bien que is slightly more common in modern French.
Never use indicative after bien que / quoique — it is a firm subjunctive trigger.

Malgré takes a noun or pronoun (not a clause). Avoir beau + infinitif expresses concession without a connector.

Malgré ses efforts, elle n'a pas réussi. (Despite her efforts...)
Malgré tout, la situation s'améliore. (Despite everything...)
Il a beau travailler dur, il n'avance pas. (However hard he works, he makes no progress.)
J'ai beau expliquer, personne ne comprend. (No matter how much I explain...)
Avoir beau = no matter how much/hard — always expresses futile effort.

These connectors introduce contrast within a text. They come at the start of a new clause.

or	now / yet (narrative)	Il pensait gagner. Or, il a perdu.
en revanche	on the other hand	Il est lent. En revanche, il est précis.
au contraire	on the contrary	Ce n'est pas difficile. Au contraire, c'est simple.

Avoid	Use	Why
Malgré qu'il travaille...	Bien qu'il travaille... / Malgré son travail...	Malgré takes a noun. For a clause with a verb, use bien que + subjonctif.
Bien qu'il est fatigué. (indicatif)	Bien qu'il soit fatigué. (subjonctif)	Bien que ALWAYS takes the subjunctive. No exceptions.
Avoir beau confusion	J'ai beau essayer = however hard I try (I'm failing)	Avoir beau does not mean 'to try in vain' — it means the effort exists but doesn't lead to success.
Au contraire ≠ en revanche	Au contraire refutes; en revanche contrasts	Au contraire contradicts the previous statement. En revanche introduces a balancing opposite point.

or	now/yet (narrative)	Il croyait réussir. Or, il a échoué.
en revanche	on the other hand	C'est cher. En revanche, c'est excellent.
au contraire	on the contrary	Ce n'est pas facile. Au contraire, c'est très difficile.
