Mixed Conditionals

A mixed conditional combines a Type 3 condition (past) with a Type 2 result (present), or vice versa. This is common in English and French for situations where a past cause has a present consequence.

Pattern	Example	Meaning
si + PQP → conditionnel présent	Si tu avais étudié, tu réussirais maintenant.	If you had studied (past), you would succeed (now).
si + imparfait → conditionnel passé	Si j'étais riche, j'aurais acheté cette maison.	If I were rich (now), I would have bought that house (then).

Au cas où + Conditionnel

Au cas où (in case) always takes the conditionnel — never the subjunctive or indicative. It expresses a precaution against a possible future event.

Prends un parapluie au cas où il pleuvrait. (in case it rains)
Laisse-moi ton numéro au cas où j'aurais besoin de toi.
Garde une copie du document au cas où il disparaîtrait.
Compare: si + présent (real condition) vs au cas où + conditionnel (precaution).

Même si / Quand bien même

Même si (even if) follows the same tense rules as si. Quand bien même (even if, even though — formal) takes the conditionnel.

Même si tu travailles dur, ce sera difficile. (even if — Type 1: présent)
Même si tu travaillais dur, ce serait difficile. (even if — Type 2: imparfait)
Quand bien même tu travaillerais dur, ce serait difficile. (formal, conditionnel)
Sauf si + présent/PC: Je viendrai, sauf si il pleut. (unless it rains)

Common Mistakes

Avoid	Use	Why
Au cas où il viendrait ou vient?	Au cas où il viendrait. (toujours conditionnel)	Au cas où = always conditionnel. Never indicative or subjunctive.
