Ne…Que — Only / Restriction

Ne…que expresses restriction: only. It is not a true negation — it limits rather than negates.

Je ne mange que des légumes. (I only eat vegetables.) → Only vegetables, nothing else.
Il n'a qu'un euro. (He only has one euro.)
Que is placed directly BEFORE the restricted element (the noun/adj/adverb), not at the end.
Alternative: seulement (Je mange seulement des légumes.) — interchangeable but ne…que is more formal.

Ni…Ni — Neither…Nor

Ni…ni replaces both elements in a negation. Articles are dropped after ni…ni. The verb is preceded by ne.

Je n'aime ni le café ni le thé. (I like neither coffee nor tea.)
Il n'a ni argent ni travail. (He has neither money nor work.) — no article after ni
With compound tenses: ne is before the auxiliary, ni…ni after: Elle n'a ni mangé ni dormi.
Ni can negate verbs: Il ne boit ni ne fume. (He neither drinks nor smokes.)

Ne…Jamais Plus / Ne…Plus Jamais — Never Again

Ne…jamais plus and ne…plus jamais both mean never again. Both are acceptable; plus jamais is slightly more emphatic.

Je ne ferai jamais plus cette erreur. (I will never make this mistake again.)
Il ne m'a plus jamais téléphoné. (He never called me again.)
Ne…plus alone = no longer / not anymore: Je ne fume plus. (I don't smoke anymore.)
Ne…jamais alone = never: Je ne mens jamais. (I never lie.)

Negation in Compound Tenses and with Infinitives

In compound tenses, most negative elements wrap around the auxiliary. With infinitives, ne pas (and most others) come BEFORE the infinitive together.

Common Mistakes

Je mange seulement que des légumes.

→

Je ne mange que des légumes. / Je mange seulement des légumes.

Ne…que and seulement are alternatives — never combine them.

Je n'aime ni le café ni le thé. (with articles)

→

Je n'aime ni café ni thé. (no articles after ni…ni)

Drop the definite/indefinite article after ni in most cases.

Il n'a pas jamais menti. (double negation)

→

Il n'a jamais menti.

Never stack ne…pas and ne…jamais. Choose one negation. Pas jamais is a double negative.

Ne que position: Je mange que des légumes.

→

Je ne mange que des légumes.

Ne…que still requires ne before the verb — que alone is not sufficient.
