Plus Que Parfait

Express an action that happened before another past action

What Is the Plus-que-parfait?

The plus-que-parfait (pluperfect) describes an action that was completed BEFORE another past action. In English: 'had done', 'had arrived', 'had eaten'.

Earlier action (PQP)Later action (PC or imparfait)
(When I arrived,)(she had already left.)
(He couldn't get in)(because he had forgotten his keys.)

Formation: Avoir/Être in Imparfait + Past Participle

The plus-que-parfait is formed with the auxiliary (avoir or être) in the imparfait + the past participle. The same verbs that use être in the passé composé use être in the PQP.

Pronounmanger (avoir aux.)aller (être aux.)
j'j'avais mangéj'étais allé(e)
tutu avais mangétu étais allé(e)
il/elleil avait mangéelle était allée
nousnous avions mangénous étions allés
vousvous aviez mangévous étiez allés
ils/ellesils avaient mangéelles étaient allées

All the same agreement rules apply: être verbs agree with subject; avoir verbs do not agree with subject.

Time Markers That Signal the PQP

Certain words and structures typically appear with the plus-que-parfait to show one action came before another:

ExpressionMeaningExample

PQP in Context: Storytelling

In a narrative, the PQP is used alongside the passé composé and imparfait to show the sequence of events. The PQP indicates the furthest-back action.

(Yesterday I went to get my tickets, but I had already lost them.)
(She was tired because she had gone to bed very late.)
(When we arrived at the restaurant, they had already ordered.)
(He didn't know you had tried to contact him.)

Common Mistakes

j'avais été là → for 'I had gone there'
j'étais allé(e) là
Aller takes être as auxiliary: j'étais allé (PQP). Avoir + été is the PQP of être itself (j'avais été = I had been).
elle avait partée
elle était partie
Partir uses être, not avoir. PQP: elle était partie. With être, the participle agrees: partie (f.).
After après que, use PQP to emphasise the completed earlier action before the next past action.
nous avions allés
nous étions allés
Aller = être auxiliary. PQP: nous étions allés. Never avions allés.
