Estar + gerundio

Structure: Two Parts

Part 1
Conjugated form of estar
Part 2
Gerund (-ando or -iendo)

The gerund never changes. Only estar is conjugated.

Step 1: Conjugate Estar

Step 2: Form the Gerund

Putting It Together

  • Yo estoy hablando con mi amigo.
  • Tú estás comiendo la cena.
  • Ella está escribiendo un correo.
  • Nosotros estamos viendo una película.

Negation: Add No

No estoy durmiendo.
I am not sleeping.

No están estudiando.
They are not studying.

Negate by placing no before estar. The gerund stays unchanged.

Common Mistake #1

Using infinitive instead of gerund
Estoy comer → Estoy comiendo

After estar, always use the -ando/-iendo form.

Common Mistake #2

Soy estudiando → Estoy estudiando

Progressive uses estar, never ser.

Common Mistake #3

Incorrect ending: -er → -iendo (not -endo)
Está comendo → Está comiendo

All -er and -ir verbs use -iendo, not -endo.

Rule of Thumb

Only use estar + gerundio for actions happening right now, at the moment of speaking.

¡Silencio! Estoy cocinando.
Quiet! I am cooking right now.
