Situações hipotéticas no presente/futuro

O Second Conditional descreve situações hipotéticas, imaginárias ou improváveis no presente ou futuro. Usamos If + past simple, would + infinitivo.

If I had more time, I would learn Japanese.

She would be happier if she lived near the sea.

If I were you, I wouldn't do that.

Formação: If + past simple, would + inf.

A cláusula 'if' usa o past simple — mas o significado é presente/futuro hipotético! 'Would' contrai para 'd.

If he worked harder, he 'd get promoted.

She would travel more if she had the money.

Would you move abroad if you got the chance?

If I were (not was)

Com o verbo 'to be' no Second Conditional, use were para todas as pessoas — mesmo I, he, she, it. 'Was' é aceitável na fala informal, mas 'were' é correto na escrita.

If I were taller, I'd play basketball.

If she were here, she'd know what to do.

If I were you, I'd accept the offer.

Erros comuns

Confusões comuns para falantes de português:

If I would have more money, I would travel.

→

If I had more money, I would travel.

Na cláusula 'if', nunca use 'would' — use o past simple.

If I am you, I would accept.

→

If I were you, I would accept.

Use 'were' (não 'am') no Second Conditional com 'to be'.

She would go if she will feel better.

→

She would go if she felt better.

Cláusula if → past simple; resultado → would + inf.
