Genérico (sem artigo)
Music is universal. Cats are independent. (declarações gerais sobre coisas incontáveis ou plurais)
Genérico (the + singular)
The piano was invented in 1700. (refere-se à espécie ou invenção como categoria)
Específico (the)
The music at the party was loud. (refere-se a algo específico e identificado)
"The" com categorias e grupos
Invenções / Instrumentos
The telephone, the internet, the guitar, the piano

Importante: Em português dizemos 'Vou para a escola' ou 'Estou no hospital'. Em inglês, quando você vai como estudante ou paciente, NÃO usa artigo: 'I go to school', 'He is in hospital'.

Substantivos abstratos em sentido geral não levam artigo.

Nunca use 'the' antes de possessivos em inglês.
