Inversion (Had I...) · provided that / unless · in case vs if
Visão Geral: Advanced Conditionals
No nível B2 você domina conectivos condicionais formais (provided that, unless, in case) e a inversão gramatical em frases condicionais de registro formal.
Provided that / As long as
significa 'contanto que' / 'desde que' You can borrow the car provided that you drive carefully.
Unless
significa 'a não ser que' / 'a menos que' (if not) We will miss the train unless we leave now.
In case
significa 'para o caso de' (precaução antecedente) Take an umbrella in case it rains. (diferente de 'if it rains')
Inversão Formal em Condicionais (Sem 'if')
Primeira Condicional (Should...)
Should you need further assistance, please contact us. (= If you should need...)
Segunda Condicional (Were...)
Were I in your position, I would accept the offer. (= If I were in...)
Terceira Condicional (Had...)
Had we known about the delay, we would have called. (= If we had known...)
In case vs If: A grande diferença
In case (precaução)
I bought food in case guests arrive. (comprei a comida de antemão)
If (condição)
I will buy food if guests arrive. (só comprarei se eles chegarem)
Importante: Em português usam-se frequentemente tempos do subjuntivo ('Se eu souber', 'Se eu soubesse'). Em inglês, após conectivos condicionais como 'unless' ou 'provided that', use o Present Simple para o futuro, NUNCA 'will': 'unless he comes' (não 'unless he will come').
Erros comuns de falantes de português
If I will see him, I will tell him.
→
If I see him, I will tell him.
Não use 'will' na oração condicional com 'if'.
I will call you in case I will need help.
→
I will call you if I need help.
Não confunda 'in case' (precaução) com 'if' (condição).
Had I knew the truth, I would have acted.
→
Had I known the truth...
Na inversão com 'Had', o verbo fica no particípio passado.
