Capítulo 9

Inversion with Negative Adverbs

Never / Rarely / Seldom · Hardly... when · No sooner... than · Not only

Visão Geral: Inversion with Negative Adverbs

I have never seen such a spectacular view.
Com inversão (Ênfase)
Never have I seen such a spectacular view.

Advérbios Restritivos Comuns

Rarely / Seldom / Hardly
Rarely do we encounter such dedication.
Seldom had she felt so confident.
Not only... but also
Not only did he pass the exam, but he also achieved the highest score.
Under no circumstances / On no account
Under no circumstances should you open this door.

Expressões Temporais: Hardly... when vs No sooner... than

Hardly / Scarcely + when
Hardly had I stepped outside when it started raining.
No sooner + than
No sooner had the meeting ended than the power went out.
Importante: Não confunda os pares! 'Hardly / Scarcely' exige 'WHEN'. 'No sooner' exige 'THAN'. Nunca use 'that' nestas estruturas.

Erros comuns de falantes de português

Rarely I have seen such a crowd.
Rarely have I seen such a crowd.
O auxiliar deve vir antes do sujeito na inversão.
Hardly had he arrived than the phone rang.
Hardly had he arrived when the phone rang.
'Hardly' usa 'when', não 'than'.
Not only he plays piano, but he sings.
Not only does he play piano...
Adicione o auxiliar 'does/did' no presente/passado.
Under no circumstances you should leave.
Under no circumstances should you leave.
Inverta a ordem do modal e do sujeito após 'Under no circumstances'.
